Mason

Masons build and repair houses, walls and decorative stonework. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. If you enjoy doing practical things and you are interested in construction, this could be the perfect job for you.

To become a mason, you will need to be able to read plans. You’ll also need to be able to work in a well organised way.

 

The study goes over a period of four years and lead to an exam that gives the Journeyman Certificate.

Purpose

This course is designed to enhance the knowledge, desirable attitudes and skills of masons in accordance with modern industry standards. It covers specialized competencies such as; Lay brick/block for structure, plaster concrete/masonry surface and Install pre-cast baluster and handrails. It also includes competencies in workplace communication, team work, safety, use of hand tools, and house keeping.

 

Learning in the subject shall contribute to competence in masonry work on façades, fireplace, chimneys and when laying tiles. Furthermore, learning in the subject shall develop competence in bricklaying, block wall masonry, plastering, laying tiles, wetroom work, slating and natural stonework, as well as caring for aesthetical and cultural values. Furthermore, the Bricklaying include making bricks, using local resources, work on the ground for preparing the building and make the correct mix of concrete.

 

Learning in the subject shall also contribute to promoting creativity, good working habits and the ability to communicate with customers, colleagues and other collaborators. Furthermore, learning in the subject shall instruct in the subject's wide range of traditional crafts. Learning in the subject shall uphold requirements for environment, health and safety.

 

Training completed and passed in the subject will lead to an examination for a Journeyman's Certificate in the trade. The professional title is Bricklayer.

 

Structure

Masonry consists of two main subject areas. The main subject areas complement each other, and should be viewed in relation to one another.

 

The study goes over four years and include both theoretical and practical subjects. As a part of the training, the student shall do internship and participate in ordinary production. The internship will be at least three periods and the last period will be at least one year. The first periods can be internship in school where the student do practically production as mention under the “Purpose”.

Practical work

The main subject area is concerned with brick making, bricklaying, building block walls, building houses, plastering and surface work, tiling and working with natural stones. Wetroom work and different kinds of rehabilitation are included in the subject.

 

It also covers drawings, work descriptions and the use of measuring tools. Planning, doing and assessing one's own work are also included. The use of pre-accepted solutions, quality assurance systems and ethical requirements for the trade are also included. Environment, use of local materials, health and safety are included in this subject.

 

Theoretical studies

The theoretical part of the study include knowledge about the material, the production process, organising work, management, drawing, accounting and customer care. In addition, Mathematic, English language skills, Reading and Writing and Computer skills are included.

 

Production

The main subject area is concerned with bricklaying for building and rehabilitation. The study include brick production, building houses and rehabilitate buildings.

Trade studies

The main subject area is concerned with the use of materials and their areas of application. Descriptions and drawings as a basis for documenting production are also included. The main subject area also covers aesthetics and cultural values and the subject's historic development and place in society. The business skills to run a company is a part of the training.

Production

The aims of the training are to enable the apprentice to

  • plan, perform, document and evaluate work

  • perform bricklaying using different bonds (brickwork patterns) and covers

  • select suitable materials for different types of work

  • create walls using different kinds of block products

  • insulate, drain and anchor masonry work

  • perform tile-laying of walls and floors

  • perform work in sanitary rooms and apply fluid membranes

  • perform slating and natural stonework using different kinds of fastening devices and substances

  • plaster and surface treat different substrate

  • wall up and erect chimneys and fireplaces

  • rehabilitate different kinds of brickwork

  • set out heights and angles with help from relevant measuring tools

  • select, use and maintain machines and equipment

  • receive and store materials and equipment with a view to economy and environment

  • use suitable protective equipment

  • mount, dismantle and modify scaffolding

  • use a quality assurance system and pre-accepted solutions for documentation of work

  • work according to drawings and descriptions

  • comply with current legislation for environment, health and safety

  • perform work in line with ergonomic principles

  • perform source separation and handle waste based on current rules and regulations

  • follow requirements for the trade work ethics

  • use digital tools for geometric calculations, drawing and documentation

 

 

Trade studies

The aims of the training are to enable the apprentice to

  • give an account of the subject's historic development, cultural values and place in society

  • give an account of content in relevant national and international legislation applicable to client rights and obligations, including rules about the right of appeal

  • act professionally when dealing with clients and customers

  • discuss and elaborate on the significance of interaction at the workplace

  • give an account of the different kinds of materials and their areas of application

  • draw sketches and make simple constructional drawings

  • uphold aesthetics requirements

  • give an account of current regulations for handling waste

 

Assessment

The student shall sit for a Journeyman's Examination, which is normally carried out over a period of five working days.
